ART RESIDENCE SCHEDULE
Each art residence is 5 days long. Participants can sign up for one or more weeks. (25% discount for second week.) Monday through Friday.
Monday to Friday 10am-12noon and 2pm-5pm.
Friday evening gathering/gallery review with dinner included.
The class will focus on drawing and painting while on location in the historic village of Garessio and its local environment.
We will focus on capturing the essence of a location in sketchbooks and with portable painting art supplies which will produce 'finished' artworks and/or research for future in-studio paintings.
WHAT TO BRING
Students are asked to bring their own 'portable' art supplies (art supply shopping list available on request) to be ready to draw and paint in the studio as well as while travelling around cobblestone streets and verdant mountains.
Students are requested to bring all art materials that they will need for the duration of the session as art supplies in the area are almost non existant. Students should bring whatever media and supports they are used to working in and/or art supplies they would like to experiment with.
A detailed shopping list is available on request but a suggested list would include:
Pencils (2B-8B) and sharpener, set of oil pastels (suggest Caran'ache) , set of color and black permenant maker pens, watercolor paint set with brushes, acrylic set of paints with brushes, acrylic gloss gel medium, portable water container for painting on location, large sketchbook or pad (11x17inch minimum. Bigger is better.) with 300 gms/in mixed media paper or cold-press watercolor paper, pre-stretched canvas (as large a size as you feel comfortable transporting), cotton rags, backpack for carrying art supplies.
WHAT IS PROVIDED
Daily instruction will be provided. Painting excursions which require driving will be arranged with the students and costs to be shared.
WHERE TO STAY
We recommend the following inns that are centrally located in the Garessio Old Town, close to the art studios.
Locanda Ponte Rosa
Address: Via Fasiani, 1, 12075 Garessio CN, Italy
B&B Porta Rose
Via Cavour 110, 12075 Garessio, Italy
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
Participants are responsible for their own accommodation, meals and transportation to and from Garessio.
The Art in Residence program is being provided by Gregory Burns.
Studio space is being donated by the Marchesa Montforte Fondazione.
All participants using the Marchesa Montforte studio will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to studio usage.
HOW TO GET TO GARESSIO
You can fly into Milan Malpensa Airport with international flights. The other alternative is Nice International Airport in Nice France or Torino Airport. Torino Airport services European flights.
DRIVING BY CAR
All the major rental car companies are available at both the Milan Malpensa Airport, Torino and Nice International Airports. For driving directions to Garessio you should google map directions and print out beforehand, rent a GPS navigator with your rental car or use the GPS on your phone.
Driving from Malpensa Airport:
Exit airport and follow signs to Torino. Once on highway, follow signs to Savona (NOT Savonera). Exit at Ceva and follow signs to Garessio.
Driving from Torino Airport:
Get on highway and follow signs to Savona (NOT Savonera) and exit at Ceva. Follow signs to Garessio.
Driving directions from Nice Airport:
Follow signs to highway in the direction Monaco. Once on the highway continue until you pass into Italy. There will be a turnoff past Imperia with a sign that indicates the exit to Col di Nava, Garessio. Take this exit and continue until you reach Garessio. Caution: This is a very windy road that goes through the mountains.
All highways in both Italy and France require toll payments. They will accept credit cards but be sure to bring euro cash as some tolls require small change.
From Milan Malpensa take the Malpensa Express to either Milano Centrale or Milano Garibaldi stations. Transfer to the high speed Frecce Rossa train to Torino Porta Nuova station. At Torino transfer to the Torino Savona line in the direction of Savona. Get off the train at Ceva. There is a bus that will take you to Garessio. It is the Ceva Ormea bus and it stops outside the train station.
From Torino Airport take bus to Torino Porta Nuova station. Get train to Savona and get off at Ceva Station.
Be sure to validate your train tickets at the stamping machines in the train station before getting on the train as the fine for not stamping your ticket is 55.00 Euros. The Ceva to Ormea bus requires you buy your bus ticket on the bus with euro cash. No credit cards. Beware: some ticket machines in the train stations only accept credit cards or ATM cards and not cash.
From Nice by Train
Take a bus from the Nice Airport to the Nice train station. The bus booths are in the airport and they sell tickets.
Once at the Nice train station, buy a train ticket that will take you to Ceva Italy via Savona Italy. You will need to change trains once you pass into Italy and also at Savona. Once at the Ceva train station you can catch the Ceva Ormea bus outside the station which will take you to Garessio.
Watch your bags and wallet at all times at the airport, train station and on the trains. Do not walk away from your bags. Carry your cash and credit cards where they cannot be pick pocketed. You might think you blend but you don't. The locals can tell you are a tourist and you are a target for the gypsies and pick pockets that work the airports and train stations.
Be sure to validate your train tickets before getting onto the train.
If you rent a car in Milan Malpensa Airport buy the fuel option. It is difficult to find a gas station when returning the car to the airport.
Be sure to check your rental car for left belongs when you return the rental car. If you leave anything, you will not get it back.
